Jimmy Little - Royal Telephone (Bandstand 1963)
Jimmy Little's most successful 1960s hit was "Royal Telephone", a gospel song recorded in October 1963. It reached number 1 in Sydney & Adelaide, number 3 in Melbourne and number 5 in Brisbane, earning him three gold records. Here is an excerpt from his performance of "Royal Telephone" on Brian Henderson's Bandstand, produced at the studios of TCN-9 in Sydney.

The Quick - Hip, Shake, Jerk

"Hip, Shake, Jerk" by The Quick reached position number 12 on the Australian record charts in early 1981. I remember it well from those days, when I did laps at the local roller skating rink. The Quick's follow up single "The Rhythm of the Jungle" was pretty popular as well. Here's a vinyl version of "Hip, Shake, Jerk".
1967 VFL Grand Final, final few minutes, colorized

I have added some rudimentary color to an originally black and white videotape recording of the 1967 VFL Grand Final, using the DeOldify web video colorizer. The process does not work perfectly and has trouble with fast moving scenes, but in the years ahead I have no doubt that this process will develop to the extent where original programmers might want to colorize appropriate content - especi...

Joanie Sommers - Don't Pity Me (1965)

Another "why wasn't it a hit" song, performed by Joanie Sommers on NBC's Hullabaloo, which also used to go to air on Australia's national ABC television network at 6:00 pm on Saturday evenings. The jangling piano "a-la-Tony Hatch style", complementing the danceable, driving beat and Joanie's polished presentation all add up to an appealing tune. It's a pity that it wasn't released in stereo, as...

During the 1960s and 1970s, television station ATV-0 in Melbourne, Australia entertained the significant Italian speaking community in Melbourne with locally produced shows such as Carosello, Tonight Italian Style, and later Variety Italian Style, long before ethnic-oriented television commenced on the SBS network. This closing excerpt, which comes from a whole show, is from one of the few surv...

Make Him Mine - Susan Maughan (1964) HD

It puzzles me why Make Him Mine was never a hit in 1964, with its Four Seasons-like vibe and Susan Maughan's stunning looks. From the 1965 British movie Pop Gear (Go Go Mania in the U.S.), this song deserves it's own "live" TV performance. Please select the 720p60 setting for that live / videotaped look.

From the TAMI show October 1964. For that live video / videotaped look please select the 720p60 HD setting, available on Google Chrome. An Avisynth frame interpolation algorithm has been used to insert intermediate frames in the original movie. R.I.P. Lesley Gore - from one of your Australian admirers.

A clip from the ABV2 Melbourne, Australia music show "Dig We Must" in December 1966. This is an original 25fps kinescope that has inserted intermediate frames, using Avisynth, to bring it some of the way back to a live video performance. This is more evident if you select the HD video setting, which allows playback at 60fps.
"High Class Woman" - John St. Peeters (1978)

"High Class Woman" had a significant amount of airplay on Australian radio stations in the late 1970's, such as Melbourne's 3MP and 3XY, reaching number 30 on the 3XY Top 40 chart in early 1979, and also featuring on several compilation albums. The obvious similarity to Bee Gees compositions around the same time goes without saying.
C'mon - New Zealand Music TV 1967 Colorized

I have reached the conclusion that it is difficult to colorize black and white clips successfully, mainly because you have to apply color at the individual pixel level and you can never be sure of the original colors, but I've always wanted to try it. Anyhow here is a broad brush result, for good or for bad. It comes into its own for some of the "psychedelic" songs in this clip.

This original 23.98 FPS movie clip has been processed with Avisynth and Avanti software to re-create a live video look. This processing can be used on old TV kinescope recordings from the 1950's and 1960's to give an idea of how the video would have looked when transmitted live.
